Patrick McCloy - in detail
I was admitted as a solicitor in 1978. After a short spell as a partner with Brian Harris, in London's West End, I relocated to Wiltshire in 1980 with the specific ambition of establishing an out of town practice capable of providing a comprehensive legal service both to London and locally based clients. During the past thirty years I have remained committed to undertaking work across a wide cross-section of the legal spectrum. Property related and non-contentious commercial issues now form the greater part of my work but I make a point of continuing to conduct litigation in a number of fields, having always held the view that practical experience in dispute resolution sharpens the instinctive ability to spot potential trouble and defuse it at an early stage.I have a particular interest in the implementation and exercise of the numerous statutory rights now available to residential lessees; enfranchisement of houses under the Leasehold Reform Act 1967, rights of pre-emption under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1987, and the rights of collective freehold acquisition and individual leasehold extension under the Leasehold Reform, Housing and Urban Development Act 1993. I am fortunate in having, for the past ten years, acted for one of the largest ground rent landlords in the south of England and I have substantial experience of representing both landlords and tenants in these fields.
On the contentious front I have conducted numerous cases at all levels through to trial and subsequent appeal. A number of my cases have been reported and my particular high spot was our success in the ground breaking case of Bell v McCubbin which turned on its head the law relating to agricultural security of tenure as it then stood and led directly to a swift introduction of new legislation to counter the effects of the decision.
Over the past few years I have committed a good deal of time to promoting our English legal services to our clients in Monaco and surrounding areas of south-eastern France. I am always there at least once a month and am otherwise available to travel at short notice. It is my long held ambition to create a truly global "local legal practice" geared to the needs of private clients and the small to mid-size business community wherever based. This lies at the heart of my approach both to our own business strategy and to the affairs of our clients.
I place a great emphasis on availability and accessibility and welcome any enquiry on any issue. If I and my colleagues cannot assist you I will usually be able to find you someone who can. Please call me or my secretary, Elaine Farley, on 01225 866563 (International +44 1225 866563) or my mobile number 07768 222744 (International +44 7768 222744).
